As part of the 2015 Do Good Data Conference in Chicago, the Tableau Foundation sponsored a “Do Good Data Viz Challenge.” The rules were simple: publish a visualization (or “viz” as the kids call it these days) explaining some set of data for a charity or some other aspect of social good.

Of all the tremendously great things happening with regard to social impact entrepreneurship, civic hacking, tech community development and the like here in Chicago, I chose to profile The Little Giraffe Foundation.

By scraping some data from the pages of their web site and also collaborating with co-founder Mike Santoro, I was able to put together a three-page story within Tableau. I hope it helps to better explain just how much Little Giraffe has done for NICU patients and their families in their four short years of operation. As the parent of a NICU alum myself, this organization has especially personal meaning for me, and I’m beyond thrilled for the opportunity to help publicize their work.
